(b) An additional 5,016 persons ascertained to have been travelling on railways, canals, &c., on the night of the 6th of June, 1841.

(c) Considerable difficulty has occurred in ascertaining the number of Clergymen in England and Wales correctly, in consequence of the word “Clerk” being equally applicable to Clergymen and to the large class of persons employed by Bankers, Merchants, and professional men. The above results have been arrived at after careful examination and correction of the totals returned under these heads in the several counties.

(d) Exclusive of many persons who have returned themselves simply as Clerks, Messengers, &c., and many who are engaged also in trade.

(e) The Navy and Marines afloat, on the night of 6th June, 1841, amounted to 28,643 men.—See also note (f)

(f) The total number of Merchant Seaman at sea on the night of the 6th June, 1841, belonging to Great Britain, according to the best information that can be obtained from the Registrar of Merchant Seamen, amounted to 138,156, making together with those enumerated on shore (including Pilots and Harbour and Quay Masters), 186,373; to which may be added of the same class of persons 23,39 Fishermen, and 40,276 Boat and Bargemen enumerated on shore; also 38,042 seamen and marines at sea and on shore belonging to the Navy, making a total of 288,630 men belonging to Great Britain employed on the sea and inland navigations.
